I love soap nuts, I guess you can say I am nuts for soap nuts... ok I guess you can say that I am also pretty lame but regardless, I love doing laundry with soap nuts.
My goal is to start cutting out all the chemical type crap from my life. I had been discussing this with my sister one day (miss you Ashley!) and she told me about this wonderful new product she bought. She said it was grossing her out to watch her little baby boy suck on his blankies and such, knowing what kinds of horrible chemicals were all over that that freshly "cleaned" blankie! So she thought she would try out soap nuts and they work. So I was skeptical but I am up for trying new things, so I decided why not. Dana and I decided to try them out but splitting a pack.
Now if you are looking for a good stain remover, I do not recommend this product. But to just do a general wash, they work great!
So now you may be asking yourself "What is this soap nut and how do I find such a wonderful thing and how do I order it now?" Ok maybe not quite, but I will answer this anyways...
What is a soap nut? - the company I buy from uses sapindus mukorossi soap nuts – the larger and more attractive of the soap nut species... Well hello soap nut!! Hehehe....you know me, always looking for the most attractive things for my life.It is an actual nut and they remove the seed, since it has no cleansing properties so you also aren't charged for the weight of the seed, woohoo! The shells contain saponin, which when wet and rubbed together, create a low sudsing soapy substance.
Where to buy? - the website I order from is www.buysoapnuts.com . They have alot of information on this website as well.
So now for those of you who want a good stain remover to go with your wonderful, all natural, soap nuts, you are in luck. Again my sister, guru of all that is all natural, gave me a bar of soap from the rocky mountain soap company called the "spotless spot remover soap." It works amazing!! It has gotten out every stain I have thrown at it. and here is the ingredient list: water, saponified oils of coconut (cocos nucifera oil), vegetable and olive oil (olea europaea oil). You can order it on line at http://www.rockymountainsoap.com/
Good luck, hopefully you will go nuts too!

I Can't believe it! I Just visited the Rocky Mountain soap company in Whistler last weekend and bought the stain remover before I read your post! Creepy! :P But now I am even more excited to use it!!
ReplyDeleteI would just like to add one more reason I LOVE about soap nuts is that you reuse the nuts for 4-5 loads and just compost them when you are done with them!! Straight from the earth, back to the earth!! I feel like this is the most environmentally friendly, natural and economic way to do my laundry and they ACTUALLY WORK!! (& my clothes are actually Softer than normal!) I feel like I've won the lottery!! :D
Everyone should visit the website Kristin provided, excellent FAQ page, and watch the video- it made me fall in love with how natural this method is, and also how it is helping the economy in third world countries where they are harvested.

I love the idea of these soap nuts. Just curious as to what size of pack you girls split? And approximately how many nuts you got in it.Just curious...
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Jen
We bought a 1kg bag, it has about 350 soap nuts in it, and will do about 300-400 loads of laundry!! So, unless Kristin does a ton of laundry, that's enough for both of us to to laundry for a year!!
DeleteI love that you guys are liking these things! I should be on rocky Mt., soap nuts, and Burts bees payroll! ;)
ReplyDeleteLove you, Kris, and miss you, too!
